This article will describe how flow cytometry permits rapid,
quantitative, relatively low cost microbial analysis that is
readily automated. The application of flow cytometry to
microbiological analysis has, until recently, been limited by
the sensitivity, reliability and cost of instrumentation
combined with a lack of specific fluorescent tags for target
microorganisms. Continuing advances in both instrumentation
and biological reagents have now reached the level of
advancement required to present flow cytometry as a valuable
tool for research and routine microbial analysis.
