Escherichia coli KO11 was grown for 16 and 27 days respectively in a
continuous stirred tank reactor with cell recycle (CSTR) and a fluidized
bed reactor. The substrate was 50 g/l glucose. Average ethanol yields of
0.44 g ethanol/g sugar added were achieved in the CSTR and 0.40 g ethanol/g
sugar added in the fluidized bed. The ethanol productivities were 1.27 gl^-
1 h^-1 and 1.12 gl^-1 h^-1 respectively at a dilution rate of 0.06 h^-1.
By-product concentrations were comparatively low and there was no
time-dependent loss in ethanologenicity. The results justify further
testing of E. coli KO11 in continuous fermentation systems.
