 en Cytotoxic Activity Of Selected Nigerian Plants

Abstract

Cancer is one of the most prominent human diseases which has stimulated scientific and commercial interest in the discovery of new anticancer agents from natural sources. The current study investigates the cytotoxic activity of ethanolic extracts of sixteen Nigerian plants used locally for the treatment of cancer using the MTT assay on the HeLa cell line. Sapium ellipticum check for this species in other resources leaves showed activity comparable to the reference compound Cisplatin and greater cytotoxic activity than Combretum paniculatum check for this species in other resources , Celosia trigyna check for this species in other resources , Drymaria cordata check for this species in other resources , Cyathula achyranthoides check for this species in other resources and Cyathula prostata check for this species in other resources . Justica extensa check for this species in other resources , Pupalia lappacea check for this species in other resources , Hedranthera barteri check for this species in other resources leaves, Alternanthera sessilis check for this species in other resources , Ethulia conyzoides check for this species in other resources leaves, Combretum zenkeri check for this species in other resources root, Sapium ellipticum check for this species in other resources stembark and Lannea nigritana check for this species in other resources stembark showed very low activity while Combretum molle check for this species in other resources , Adenanthera parvoniana check for this species in other resources and Lannea acida check for this species in other resources showed no activity. The results justify the use of Sapium, Combretum, Celosia, Drymaria and Cyathula in traditional treatment of cancer.
