Subcutaneous Abscesses a Public Health problem in a rural population in Estado Carabobo, Venezuela López, Luis Ignacio & Lizardo, Alfonsina Abstract Subcutaneous abscesses are collections of pus localized between the dermis and deep tissues; over the last few years an increase in the number of patients with skin infections have been registered in Montalbán in the state of Carabobo. Objective: To present the epidemiologic situation of skin and subcutaneous tissue infections in the period 2009-2011 and to describe the clinical-demographic characteristics of the patients attended in the Rural Ambulatory Type II “Dr. Luis Pérez Carreño” in Montalbán. Materials and Methods: 18 patients with subcutaneous abscesses, single or multiples, that attended the emergency consultation at the medical center between February 27 and March 16 were studied. Results: 23 lesions were studied and distributed in 18 patients, mainly women (66%) y localized in thighs (26%, n=6), armpits (17,4%, n=4) and buttocks (17,4%, n=4). Conclusions: Subcutaneous abscesses are a public health care problem in Montalban, presented more frequently in women, and mainly localized on the trunk, lesions were painful and with extensive erythema in most cases. Abscesos subcutáneos un problema de salud pública en una población rural del Estado Carabobo, Venezuela López, Luis Ignacio & Lizardo, Alfonsina Resumen Los abscesos subcutáneos son colecciones de pus entre la dermis y los tejidos profundos; durante los últimos años se ha registrado un aumento en el número de pacientes con infecciones de piel en el municipio Montalbán del estado Carabobo. Objetivo: presentar la situación epidemiológica de las infecciones de piel y tejido subcutáneo durante el periodo 2009-2011 y describir las características clínico-demográficas de los pacientes atendidos en el Ambulatorio Rural tipo II “Dr. Luís Pérez Carreño” en el municipio Montalbán. Materiales y métodos: se estudiaron 18 pacientes con abscesos subcutáneos, únicos o múltiples, que se presentaron a la consulta de emergencia entre el 27 de febrero y 16 de marzo. Resultados: se estudiaron 23 lesiones distribuidas en 18 pacientes, mayoritariamente mujeres (66%) y localizados en los muslos (26%, n= 6), axilas (17,4%, n= 4) y glúteos (17,4%, n= 4). Conclusión: los abscesos subcutáneos son un problema de salud pública en el municipio Montalbán, se presentaron con mayor frecuencia en mujeres, localizados en el eje axil, dolorosos y con eritemas extensos en un alto porcentaje.
