en Antibiotic Sales Regulation In Venezuela and Bacterial Resistance
Gomes De Andrade, Carlos A. & Alonso, Guillermina

Abstract

The loss of antibiotic efficacy has been attributed mainly to its indiscriminate consumption. To control this problem, sales of some antibiotics in Venezuela were regulated in January 2006, making medical prescription indispensable to acquire them. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of this regulation on bacterial resistance. Antibiotic consumption was expressed in the number of Daily Defined Doses per 1,000 inhabitants per day, calculated with the information from the International Marketing System Health. Bacterial resistance was gotten from the database of the Program for Antimicrobial Bacterial Resistance Surveillance in Venezuela. The connection between both variables was established through correlation analysis. The results show that antibiotic consumption and bacterial resistance have suffered a significant increase after the application of the regulation. It is necessary to amplify its application to all the antibiotics and to improve health care professionals’ education for their adecuate prescription.

Gomes De Andrade, Carlos A. & Alonso, Guillermina
