Algunos aspectos de la biología reproductiva y poblacional del torroto, Genyatremus luteus , (Bloch, 1797) (Pisces: Haemulidae) en el golfo de Paria, Venezuela Gabriel Gómez, Ramón Guzmán y Ramón Chacón Resumen El torroto, Genyatremus luteus , es una especie de interés pesquero y creciente valor comercial en la pesquería artesanal del Golfo de Paria. La estructura de tamaños, talla de madurez del 50 % de la población, época reproductiva y la relación peso-longitud se estudiaron como aspectos fundamentales para el conocimiento de la biología, dinámica poblacional y evaluación de este recurso. Se analizó una muestra de 500 ejemplares obtenidos entre enero y diciembre de 1999. Las tallas se analizaron a partir de un histograma de frecuencias con intervalo de 10 mm, que oscilaron entre un rango de clases de 135 a 395 mm de longitud total (Lt), con promedio de 254 mm. La regresión peso - longitud no mostró diferencias significativas (P<0,05) entre sexos y quedó expresada como: P = 1,009 x10-4 *Lt 2,67 describiendo un crecimiento relativo en peso alometrico (P<0,05). La talla de madurez del 50% estimada fue 345 mm de Lt. Un 90% de los especimenes presentó tallas inferiores a esta. La presencia de ejemplares en avanzado estado de madurez entre enero y junio, con mayor intensidad en febrero, pudiera indicar que durante este período ocurre la mayor actividad reproductiva de la especie. La estructura de tallas y el significativo porcentaje de ejemplares inferiores a la talla de primera madurez del 50% de la población, reflejarían una fuerte actividad pesquera sobre el recurso, que sugiere mantener los monitoreos para profundizar en conocimientos sobre su biología y dinámica como aspectos fundamentales para la definición de políticas de manejo en el Golfo de Paria. Some aspects of the reproductive and population biology of torrotogrunt, Genyatremus luteus (Bloch, 1797) (Pisces: Haemulidae), in the Paria gulf, Venezuela Gabriel Gómez, Ramón Guzmán y Ramón Chacón Abstract Torroto grunt, Genyatremus luteus , is a species with fishing interest and a growing commercial value in the artisanal fishery of the Gulf of Paria. The size structure, size at maturity of 50%, reproductive period and length - weight relationship were studied as fundamental parameters for the study of the reproductive biology, population dynamics and evaluation of this resource. A sample of 500 individuals collected between January and December 1999 was analyzed. Sizes varied between 133 and 388 mm of total length (Tl), with an average of 254 mm. The length - weight (W) relationship did not differ significantly between sexes (P > 0.05), so the common regression was W= 1,009 x 10-4 * Tl2,67 , with an allometric relative growth rate (P < 0.05). The estimated size at maturity of 50% was 345 mm Tl for both sexes. Ninety percent of individuals in the sample were below this size. The presence of individuals in advanced maturity stage between January and June, with a higher intensity during February, shows that greater reproductive activity of this species takes place during this period. The size structure and the significant proportion of individuals below the size at maturity of 50%, would reveal an intense fishing activity upon the resource, which suggests that monitoring of this fishery should be maintained in order to improve the knowledge of the biology and dynamics of this resource as fundamental aspects for the definition of managing polices in the gulf of Paria.
