Marcano, Antonio Gómez y Osmilcar Vallenilla Abstract A study of the mortality and relative yield for recruit of Plagioscion squamosissimus was carried out in the region of the middle Orinoco river in Venezuela, between January of 2000 and December of 2002; using the longitude of fish captured in the main channel of the river and in one of its flood lagoons. The rate of total mortality was determined by a curve of capture, while the relative yield for recruit was estimated by the model of Beverton and Holt (1966). The rate of total mortality was of 0.710 year-1, with a natural mortality of 0.480 year-1 and mortality for fishing of 0.230 year-1. The rate of exploitation of the species at the moment was 0.324, while the estimated to reach the maximum yield for recruit was 0.880. The results of the yield for recruit indicated that the species show a moderate exploitation. Marcano, Antonio Gómez y Osmilcar Vallenilla Resumen Se estudió la mortalidad y el rendimiento relativo por recluta de Plagioscion squamosissimus en el Orinoco medio de Venezuela, entre enero del 2000 y diciembre del 2002; utilizando las frecuencias de talla de peces capturados en el canal principal del Orinoco medio y en una de sus lagunas de inundación. La tasa de mortalidad total se determinó mediante una curva de captura, mientras que el rendimiento relativo por recluta se estimó por el modelo de Beverton y Holt (1966). La tasa de mortalidad total fue de 0,710 año-1, con una mortalidad natural de 0,480 año-1 y una mortalidad por pesca de 0,230 año-1. La tasa de explotación a la cual se encuentra sometida actualmente la especie fue de 0,324, mientras que la estimada para alcanzar el máximo rendimiento por recluta fue de 0,880. Los resultados del rendimiento por recluta indican que la especie presentaría una explotación moderada.
