Instructions to Authors
BIOTECNOLOGIA APLICADA is a vehicle of Iberian-Latin- American scientists working in different fields of modern biotechnology for the diffusion of their experiences, and results. Some of the main topics that are considered for publication are the following: (a) Molecular genetics and recombinant DNA technology; (b) Therapeutic and prophylactic uses of molecules obtained by biotechnological methods; (c) Immunotechnology and development of diagnostic ethods; (d) Chemistry, biochemistry and design of molecules with biological activity; (e) Application of recombinant DNA techniques and its products in agriculture and animal science; (f) Tissue culture; (g) Transgenesis; (h) Fermentation, ecovery and purification of biotechnological products; (i) Scaling-up, plant design and economic evaluation; (j) Control and automation of processes.
Sections and Instructions to Authors
Biotecnología Aplicada publishes review papers, original full and short articles and articles on techniques. The guidelines for submission of manuscripts are in agreement with the recomendations of the International Committee of Editors of Medical Journals, contained in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, originally published in the British Medical Journal 1997;314:1-10. Contributions to the Journal are published at no charge to the author. Once a paper has been accepted for publication, it cannot be withdrawn, and the reproduction rights will become a property of the editorial house (copyright).
On receipt of a manuscript, the Editorial Board appoints two reviewers, that will receive "blind" copies for analysis. Authors will be allowed to indicate beforehand the name of one reviewer who should be excluded. The final decision on whether a manuscript should be published as Research Article, or Article on Techniques will be taken by the Editorial Board, based on the suggestions of the reviewers. The authors will be informed always for final approval.
General Typing Instructions
The publishing languages are Spanish and English. All texts are subjected to style revision, and clarity of expression is considered critical for further analysis of the papers. The main text, abstracts, tables, and references should be typed double spaced, with wide margins and no more that 30 lines per page (60 characters per line).
The manuscripts should be delivered in three copies The heading page should include: the full title of the paper in English and Spanish, full name of all authors, the name of the department and institution in which the work was done, the mailing address and telephone, fax and electronic mail address, running head (of fewer than 40 characters) and key words in English and Spanish.
The manuscripts should be submitted with an introductory letter signed by all authors with the following information: a) a statement that all authors have seen and accepted the submitted manuscript and all its parts; b) a confirmation that neither the submitted paper nor any of its parts has been published elsewhere (except as abstracts or press reports) nor will be submitted to other media for its publication without previous acknowledgment of Biotecnología Aplicada; c) a statement about the financial or other kind of relations that could derive into any interest conflict; d) the name, address, telephone, fax and electronic mail of the correspondence author, who will be in charge of the communication with the other co-authors.
The number of co-authors should not be more than eight, unless in exceptional cases, when it is justified by written statement to this Publisher. (See the authorship criteria contained in the Uniform Requirements).
Authors should also enclose an electronic version of the paper in floppy diskettes using Word or WordPerfect. The figures should also be included in the diskette edited in any of the commonly used program, such as Excel, Paintbrush r Harvard Graphics. The Journal is not responsible for any damage incurred during mailing of these materials. The names of the files and programs used should be specified in writing.
Preparation of the Manuscripts
Review Papers
The Journal will publish preferentially invited Review Papers. Nevertheless, the Editorial Board will consider reviews related to the main purposes and aims of the Journal, where the authors offer a well documented general descriptive view of the field, as well as critical opinions on its future development. Direct involvement of the author(s) in the field is strongly taken into account for the acceptance of review papers.
The structure and headings of the Review Papers are established by the author(s), but the Editorial Board can suggest changes for an improved edition. The references will follow the same rules as for the Original Full Articles (see below).
Research Articles
The Journal publishes the results and analysis of original clinical or laboratory experiments, with relevant or limited scientific conclusions as Research Articles, respectively. These should not exceed 20 pages, including tables, graphs, figures and references.
Capitalized major headings will be included in this order: Abstracts (English and Spanish), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References. A single heading for Results and Discussion is recommended for Research Articles with limited conclusions.
Articles on Techniques
The Journal highly considers the publication of «Articles on Techniques» (no more than 15 pages), as an important way for the diffusion of: I (1) original techniques and processes, (2) relevant adaptations of known techniques or processes, and (3) reviews on techniques and processes (up to 15 pages). The structure of the two former types of articles is the same as for original articles; for the third it is defined by the author(s), but the Editorial Board can suggest changes entitled to improve edition. It is strongly suggested that the author(s) provide enough information so as to allow the application of the technique or process in other laboratories.
Abstract
The abstract will be limited to 200 words but nonetheless should provide a comprehensive idea of the main results that are reported. For English papers, the Editorial Council will provide a Spanish translation of the Abstract, if not enclosed by the author(s). The abstracts should be informative and structured, in a way that they could bring a clear idea of all parts of the work.
References
Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in brackets. References cited only in tables or in legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration.
The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used by the publication.
Try to avoid using abstracts as references; "unpublished observations" and "personal communications" may not be used as references, although references to written, not oral, communications may be inserted (in parentheses) in the ext. Include among the references papers accepted but not yet published; designate the journal and add "in press". Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be cited in the text as "unpublished observations" (in parentheses). The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents.

Tables and Figures
Tables and Figures (graphs, photos, drawings) will be ordered numerically, in Arabic. s, and presented in separate pages. Only the Tables will bear a descriptive title. The legends for all Figures will be included consecutively under such heading in a separate page. Each Table or Figure should stand alone, i.e., will contain all necessary information in the captions (title, notes, legends) that allows an understanding independently of the text. Do not make tables, figures or graphics for data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences. Axis in graphs will specify the magnitudes and units, and these and other figures should be professionally drawn or produced as high quality computer outputs. Clear black and white photographs printed in glossy paper will be accepted. All figures should be identified on the back with the name of the author(s) and correct orientation, in pencil.
The photographs should have a good quality and a sharp contrast, without any mark or legend, which will be provided on vegetal paper fixed on the picture.
The author(s) will indicate clearly in the text where the tables and figures should be placed.
Footnotes
Footnotes (manuscripts in preparation, personal communications, unpublished results) should be typed single-spaced at the bottom of the appropriate page, and separated from the text.
