Professor O’Sullivan was born in Cork Ireland in 1946. He married Breda O’Callahan in 1972 and has 3 children. The University College Cork was his Alma Mater between 1963 to 1969, followed by an Internship.  He then went to Dublin to do his pre-fellowship training with short periods spent in the United States and Canada. After he completed his Higher Surgical Training in1979 he spent time in the Middle East and North America before returning to Ireland. Since then he has devoted his life to cancer work in Ireland and became Director of the Cancer Research Centre in Cork.

Professor O’Sullivan has a remarkable curriculum vitae. He has 10 postgraduate qualifications; has supervised 20 Doctorate Theses; has 37 awards achievements and titles; 44 memberships of learned societies and committees; 29 keynote invited lectures; 7 patents to his name, and has developed 11 new surgical techniques mainly in gastrointestinal oncology. He has 229 publications to his name in such a diverse list of journals as in immunology, research, cancer, pharmacology, vaccines, haematology, ultrasound, microbiology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal-oesophageal surgery, which has been his main interest.

Professor O’Sullivan has followed a tradition which is characteristic of his compatriots in Ireland. Generations of religious orders; scholars; and educators have served the less well endowed populations of this world. In line with this humanitarian process, he was responsible for establishing links with COSECSA. The objective being to enhance surgical training and standards in the East Central and Southern African region. It is a remarkable coincidence that we completed surgical training in 1979, spent part of our training in the Charitable Infirmary, Ireland and became Presidents of our respective Colleges and signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2007. The honour which COSECSA is about to bestow on Professor O’Sullivan is a fitting tribute coming from the surgical fraternity in East Central and Southern Africa, who consider it essential to express their gratitude and respect to an outstanding representative of Irish Surgery.

Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa I have the privilege to bestow the highest honour this College can offer - the Honorary Fellowship in Surgery – to Professor Gerald Christopher O’Sullivan.
